Introduction to Unix/Linux

Description: This class provides a general introduction to the operating system used on the ACCRE cluster environment.

Required for ACCRE Use: If you have an ACCRE account and are not fluent in the Unix/Linux environment, this class is a necessary prerequisite for the Introduction to the Compute Cluster and the Job Scheduler Details classes which are required for all new cluster users (please read the training requirements). You are not required to take this class if you already know Unix/Linux.

Prerequisites: No. There are no prequisites for this class. However, if you plan to use the ACCRE cluster, you will find the class more meaningful if you already have an account. If you do not yet have an account, please feel free to request one.

Format: The "Introduction to Unix/Linux" is conducted in one 2-hour session of hands-on, instructor-led presentations and demonstrations. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their laptops or use a laptop available in the training classroom to follow along with the demonstrations. If you already have a cluster account, know your username and password.

Cost: None.

Course Content: This is a beginning level class on Unix/Linux operating systems. Topics covered include:

  • Overview of Unix/Linux operating systems
  • Command line execution and shortcuts
  • Getting help with commands
  • Files and directories, including access rights
  • Your Environment
  • Text Editors
  • Input/output redirection
  • Pipelines and filters
  • Processes and multitasking
  • Simple Unix scripting
  • Compressing and archiving data
